In this episode of MedEdge, we spoke with Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL, a pioneering force in the nursing profession. Love is the Founder and President Emeritus of SONSIEL, the Society of Nurse Scientists, Innovators, Entrepreneurs & Leaders as well as being the Co-Founder of the Commission for Nurse Reimbursement, two organizations working to create better opportunities for those in the nursing profession.
Love's journey into nursing, driven by a nudge from her mother, shifted her planned career path from law to healthcare. This pivot was not just a personal transformation but a leap towards addressing the frontline challenges in healthcare through the lens of a nurse. Her work, particularly through Nurse Hackathons and the founding of SONSIEL, underscore a profound commitment to empowering nurses, recognizing their pivotal role in healthcare innovation, and addressing systemic challenges that the profession faces.
In a far-ranging conversation, Love walked us through the history of nursing, including key policy changes from nearly a century ago that have had profound impacts on how nurses are compensated. From there, she shared her own challenges with introducing more empowerment into her nursing roles, challenges that ultimately led her to become the Director of Nurse Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Northeastern University, and paved the way for the creation of SONSIEL.
As Rebecca Love continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in nursing, her story and insights offer a powerful narrative for the MedEdge audience. It's a narrative that calls for a collective reevaluation of how we view, value, and empower nurses. It encourages us to see nurses not just as caregivers, but as leaders, innovators, and indispensable architects of a better healthcare future.
